The program is designed to produce qualified church leaders that are qualified to lead church members of the NBC USA Inc. in and beyond the 21st century. The Sunday School Publishing Board provides the programs of study that supports the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. The Division of Christian Education and Accreditation and Credentials (DECAC) provide direction and oversight of all Christian Leadership Schools (CLS). COPP program courses are taught at CLS.

History of the COPP Program 

The Certificate of Progress Program, organized at the Sunday School Publishing Board in October 1937, was designed to produce qualified teachers that would lead church members into the twenty-first century.  Dr. Marshall A. Talley has been credited as the person that instituted the COP Program. In 1978 Dr. Amos Jones, Jr., undertook the leadership of the COP Program to take it to new heights.

Objectives of COPP

  1. To increase biblical knowledge
  2. To create an understanding of the Baptist Church
  3. To provide an educational structure that will develop candidates qualified for teaching and leadership positions.
  4. To provide incentives for candidates to complete the program; and 
  5. To produce trained church leaders

  2. Doctrine of the Holy Spirit
  3. Introduction to the New Testament
  4. Effective Bible Reading
  5. Blacks in the Bible
  6. The Black Church & Social Justice
  7. The Art of Working with Our Youth
